Fulham Palace: Dig the History!

Community Dig

We are very excited to carry out a community archaeological dig of the Tudor dovecote in October and preparations for this project are now in progress. With the help of 22 volunteers, we will be investigating the site of the octagonal Tudor dovecote (4.3m dia.), which was demolished in the 1760s.

We know that the Tudor Dovecote is a structure of considerable local and historic significance because, in 1647, Parliamentary surveyors acknowledged the presence of ‘a fair brick Dovehouse’ in the Outer Court of Fulham Palace – we now just need to discover it!

The dovecote’s story offers a revealing perspective on the Palace’s transformation from a working ecclesiastical manor into the fashionable country residence of the 18th century, and on evolving attitudes of the Church elite. This will be the only structure of its type to be excavated within the context of the ecclesiastical household.

The community dig will take place onsite over a period of three weeks from 9 October. We will be keeping you informed of its progress in the lead up to it and beyond.

We’re Crowdfunding!
