From skeletons to lice combs and everything else in between…

‘Dig the History’ is in full swing and our enthusiastic team of organisations and volunteers have been uncovering yet more intriguing finds from our dig site. The diggers have been in and removed the bulk of the top soil so now it is down to our dedicated team to get dirty and hand excavate!

A post medieval pit is being carefully examined, and amongst the rubble we’ve uncovered some Tudor bricks and tile fragments – including some possible Delftware from the 17th Century. After last week’s discovery of a dog skeleton, one of this week’s slightly ickier finds was a fragment of what we think is a lice comb made of bone, potentially from the 17th or 18th Centuries! We’ve yet to determine whether any lice remain intact…

The head scratching continued when we found what are possibly fragments of nesting boxes – could we be edging closer to potentially finding our Tudor Dovecote? Only more digging will tell! One thing that is for certain is we’ll be keeping our specialists busy with studying our finds – each piece has been washed, labelled and bagged ready for analysis. One of those recent finds includes a charming metal brooch, with a green hue which suggests that it could be made of copper, brass or maybe even bronze. We’ll need the experts to have a closer look at this one!

We’ve welcomed many budding young archaeologists to our Community Dig including Holy Cross Catholic Primary School and All Saints Wandsworth. Their help in digging and sieving for items and washing the finds has helped us enormously and we’re very grateful. Keep checking for more of our fascinating finds as ‘Dig the History’ continues!
