Young Archaeologists’ Club

On 21st February 2015 we launched West London’s first Young Archaeologists’ Club! We teamed up with the Council for British Archaeology (CBA), an educational charity, to open a ‘YAC’ branch providing an opportunity for children to have fun finding out about their local history and archaeology, meeting real archaeologists and craftspeople, developing new skills and making new friends in the process.

YAC clubs exist up and down the country providing 8 to 16 year olds with a chance to discover the past through investigating artefacts and exploring the world around them. Our first session ‘What is an Archaeologist’ was a great success with 9 young archaeologists taking part. The children handled real ‘mystery’ objects guessing what they were made out of and what they were used for. We then learnt the basics of what an Archaeologist does and viewed our ‘Fishtank’ which is a model demonstrating how archaeologists delve down through layers in the earth to discover the past. We then went outside for a sticker trail, identifying key features of our grounds (like our 500 year old Holm oak and the Tudor gate to our Walled Garden) before heading back to the classroom to excavate fake skeleton burials using real archaeologist’s tools.

As the term continues YAC club members will learn all the basics of archaeology from experienced archaeologists working in beautiful surroundings and discover the links that connect the site and themselves back to antiquity.

Membership of the Saturday morning club is low cost and the possibilities for fun activities are endless. Each month there will be a different theme covering everything from Roman crafts and dendrochronology, otherwise known as tree-ring dating, to historic poo and investigating the Thames Foreshore. There are also opportunities for older children interested in archaeology as a career to join the group as peer mentors, helping the younger children in the group and supporting the workshop leader.

The club meets monthly on Saturday mornings from 10.30am to 12.15pm.  Upcoming sessions this term are:

21st March: Where are we? Archaeology at Fulham Palace

18th April: Trip to the Thames: Exploring the local foreshore

23rd May:  Finds from the Foreshore

20th June: Being a Roman

18th July: Trees as Archaeology

Children must be of the correct age and able to attend the class independently.  Cost is £15 per session. Booking is essential

We’re also looking for volunteers to help us run the club. If you are interested, please click here to learn more!
