Wisteria arch appeal
The famous and well-established wisteria in the walled garden needs your help.
The strength of the twisting vine and the weight of the mature wood has meant that the existing structure it lives on is slowly being crushed. In order for the wisteria to continue to thrive and bring perennial joy to all of our visitors, and future generations to come, we are calling on the community to help rebuild its home. You can become a part of history by lending your support to one of London’s most important botanical gardens since the 16th century. Donate today, spread the word, and help our garden be a destination for all to enjoy in the years to come.

The new supports will be made of steel, with a design informed by the original hoops which can be seen in Victorian photographs of the wisteria. If you look closely in the garden you can see some of the remains of the original wisteria supports poking up from the ground.
The supports will be arranged in a double row of hoops with interlinking bars for extra stability. There will be 30 pairs of joined hoops (60 hoops in total) for the dramatic curve of the wisteria across the knot garden. These hoops will be a sturdy support for the wisteria as well as giving the vine its original shape back. We hope that the new supports will last another 200 years! You can support the wisteria appeal by donating through PayPal, cheque or bank transfer. Our target for the campaign is £20,000 and we’ll be keeping a running total on this page throughout the campaign so you can see how we’re doing.
You can donate as much or little as you want – every penny raised in the appeal will go to keeping the wisteria flourishing for generations.
Sponsor a hoop
If you would like to donate a whole hoop for the wisteria, you will soon be able to pick the ‘sponsor a hoop’ option on PayPal. A hoop donation is £340 and will be very gratefully received.
