Black History Month at Fulham Palace

Join us at Fulham Palace this Black History Month for exciting events and learn how we’re working to create a more inclusive, anti-racist museum.

We’re thrilled to announce that Fulham Palace Trust is one of just six UK museums taking part in the Museums Association’s Anti-Racist Museum Programme, running from May to November 2024. This initiative builds on the Palace’s ongoing efforts in decolonisation and anti-racism. We’ve been working closely with schools and community groups to enhance our permanent exhibitions as well as our temporary exhibitions such as The Bishops of London, Colonialism, and Transatlantic Slavery: Resistance, which opened in April 2023.

There’s plenty happening around Hammersmith and Fulham to celebrate Black History Month, and we’re excited to be a stop on the Black History Trails leaflets created by the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. The Fulham trail launches at Fulham Palace on 22 October, from 17.00 – 19.00, and it’s just one of the many fantastic activities the council has planned across the borough.

Throughout October, you can also catch Turning Point at the Palace, a thought-provoking film produced by Sweet Patootie Arts. This pioneering project highlights the incredible contributions of Caribbean people during World War I and the building of the Panama Canal, and how those experiences sparked a wave of Black pride that inspired the Windrush Generation to come to Britain after World War II. It’s a must-see!

In addition, we’ve organised a series of talks throughout October and November 2024, to draw attention to ongoing historical research around the Bishops of London and the role of the Church of England in the colonies. The talk series will include a panel discussion in November, where we’ll be talking with partners and experts about the next steps in our journey to creating a truly anti-racist museum.
