Hidden stories of the Home Front: WWII family activity day
Discover what life was like for families on the Home Front in this free WWII family activity day!
Step back into the Second World War and discover what life was really like for families on the Home Front. Children and grown-ups can enjoy a full day of hands-on activities inspired by real wartime stories from Fulham Palace and beyond.
This event is supported by Hammersmith and Fulham council as part of their exhibition, Clive Cobb: a wartime childhood in Fulham. You can see one of Cobb’s barrage balloon automatons, That’s the way to do it! in the Fulham Palace library, where it’s on display until the end of April. Fulham Palace was a place of billeting for the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF), who were the Squadron 24 site for barrage balloons.
Your ticket includes all activities on the day, so you can explore freely and join in as much as you like!
Crafts & activities
On arrival, register for your wartime identity card and you’ll be issued with a ration book and clothing coupons. You will then begin your training to become a WAAF or a member of the home guard to support the war effort. Training includes a morse code mission, bombs away challenge, make do and mend and much more!
Partners
We’ll be welcoming Battle of Britain Bunker, who will share their air defence expertise through games and challenges. Join History Riot to discover more about wartime in London with immersive family workshops, or Home Front History who will be bringing interactive displays to explore the evacuee experience and wartime weddings. Watch out for their costumed characters roaming the site, ready to surprise, entertain and bring history to life for the whole family!
