Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC): grain storage pits
Discover the secrets hidden beneath our feet with the Young Archaeologists’ Club, designed for curious minds aged 8 to 16.
Led by Fulham Palace’s community archaeologist, Alexis Haslam, each session explores a different aspect of archaeology through hands on activities, experiments, crafts and excursions. Young archaeologists will investigate real discoveries, meet expert specialists and uncover how archaeologists piece together stories from the past.
Grain storage pits
Experiment with Iron Age food storage and discover how ancient communities prepared for winter.
How did Iron Age communities keep grain fresh without modern storage methods? In this session, we’ll investigate how underground storage pits were used to preserve seed corn for the following growing season. Through practical experiments, we’ll test different storage methods and discover whether our grain would survive the winter, just as it needed to thousands of years ago.
