Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC): knucklebone floor

Discover the secrets hidden beneath our feet with the Young Archaeologists’ Club, designed for curious minds aged 8 to 16.

Led by Fulham Palace’s community archaeologist, Alexis Haslam, each session explores a different aspect of archaeology through hands on activities, experiments, crafts and excursions. Young archaeologists will investigate real discoveries, meet expert specialists and uncover how archaeologists piece together stories from the past.

Knucklebone floor

Discover one of history’s strangest flooring techniques and create your own miniature version.

Have you ever seen a floor made from bones? During the post medieval period, sheep leg bones were sometimes placed on end to create decorative and hard wearing floors. In this session, we will explore the archaeology behind these unusual surfaces before making our own model knucklebone floors (don’t worry, no real bones included).

Event details:

• Our Young Archaeologists’ Club is for ages 8 – 16.
• Students attend independently.
• Attendees should come dressed in appropriate clothing for outdoor activities.
• Guardians will be asked to sign a photo permission form for their student at this workshop. There is no obligation to sign this form if you do not wish your child to be photographed.
