Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC): a bridge of boats
Discover the secrets hidden beneath our feet with the Young Archaeologists’ Club, designed for curious minds aged 8 to 16.
Led by Fulham Palace’s community archaeologist, Alexis Haslam, each session explores a different aspect of archaeology through hands on activities, experiments, crafts and excursions. Young archaeologists will investigate real discoveries, meet expert specialists and uncover how archaeologists piece together stories from the past.
A bridge of boats
Can you recreate the ingenious floating bridge that once linked Fulham and Putney?
Did you know the first crossing between Fulham and Putney wasn’t a bridge at all? During the English Civil War, Parliamentarian forces created a temporary bridge of boats across the Thames to pursue the Royalists into Surrey. In this session, we’ll explore the history behind this remarkable structure and see if we can recreate this ingenious feat of engineering ourselves.
Event details:
- Our Young Archaeologists’ Club is for ages 8 – 16.
- Students attend independently.
- Attendees should come dressed in appropriate clothing for outdoor activities.
- Guardians will be asked to sign a photo permission form for their student at this workshop. There is no obligation to sign this form if you do not wish your child to be photographed.
