Today is Giving Tuesday – a day of global giving and a day when we celebrate the charities and good causes that mean so much to us all.
#GivingTuesday provides the opportunity to make a real difference to charities, such as Fulham Palace today.
As an independent charitable trust, we receive no government funding meaning we rely on other sources to generate the necessary income we need to operate. Running and maintaining our historic site is made possible through these key sources of funding such as the income our memberships provide, the bequests we receive and the generous donations made by individuals and corporate donors. All of this, and the ongoing generosity of our supporters, allow us to keep the Palace open for visitors to enjoy while continuing the preservation and restoration work of our unique historic site ensuring it inspires for centuries to come.
The current challenges of running a free-entry historic site
The Museums Association (MA) has expressed deep concerns about the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on museums across the UK. This is an incredibly difficult time and it is impacting all of us.
As an independent charity, Fulham Palace Trust is not guaranteed any government funding. Our supporters are now more vital than ever in helping us keep the Palace open and free for all to enjoy.
It costs £4,000 a day to run this special historic house and garden. There will undoubtedly be challenges ahead as we seek to maintain appropriate conditions for our audiences and our collection, in an energy-hungry heritage building. For context, before this economic crisis, the Palace’s annual electricity bill was already at £45,000!
We continue to work to protect the history of the Palace through a variety of campaigns, such as our previous campaign to preserve the 200-year-old walled garden wisteria. Now, we are asking for help to continue to keep our gates and doors open. Our vision remains the same – to engage people through the stories of Fulham Palace and the Bishops of London, in 6,000 years of English history, becoming one of the UK’s most inclusive and inspiring historic houses and gardens.
Give to the Palace to help secure its future
Inspired by #GivingTuesday here are three ways you can show your support and help to keep the Palace open for future visitors:
Join or renew your membership as a Friend or Patron
Membership is a fantastic way to support our work while enjoying a range of benefits as a Friend or Patron of the Palace. Enjoy perks such as priority booking, exclusive event invitations, discounts, behind-the-scenes insights, and more!
Join our supporter community today, and you can make an immediate and valuable impact on the financial stability of the Palace, making a real difference.
Give the gift of a Fulham Palace membership!
Our membership program offers two levels of membership and ways to support the Palace. Becoming either a friend of the Palace or a Patron. This festive season why not think about the gift of friendship or patronage? It is an incredibly thoughtful and unique present and one that will make a real difference to the future of the Palace.
Donate to our greatest need fund through our website
In the spirit of #GivingTuesday, you can donate directly towards the essential running costs at Fulham Palace. These might not be glamorous, but they are hugely important to keeping the Palace open.
Essential building maintenance of our historical rooms and objects is part of these core costs. Recently, a well-known historic room sustained flood damage to key decorative plasterwork. As this was unexpected, the room is now undergoing urgent restoration work. Water damage is one of the types of unpredictable events or unplanned needs that significantly increase the running costs of the Palace.
Your #GivingTuesday donation can make a real difference in helping tackle unexpected everyday operational challenges.
